Optimizing antenna design for near-field operation - RF Cafe Forums

RF Cafe Forums closed its virtual doors in late 2012 mainly due to other social media platforms dominating public commenting venues. RF Cafe Forums began sometime around August of 2003 and was quite well-attended for many years. By 2012, Facebook and Twitter were overwhelmingly dominating online personal interaction, and RF Cafe Forums activity dropped off precipitously. Regardless, there are still lots of great posts in the archive that ware worth looking at. Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts. Hi Everyone,

If I want to optimize an antenna (at around 1GHz) for magnetic near-field coupling, what options do I have? Off hand, I'm thinking that something like a loop antenna would be a good start, as the magnetic field dominates in the near-field. Still, is there some way to minimize my far-field radiation while getting good near-field coupling?

I'd appreciate any insights! Thanks!

Hi gt7235d,

You could use a shielded loop. This should effectively ensure that there is no E-field and all you would be left with is the H-field since the tangential component of E field on the conductor being used as the shield should be 0.
