Practical Antenna Matching - RF Cafe Forums

RF Cafe Forums closed its virtual doors in late 2012 mainly due to other social media platforms dominating public commenting venues. RF Cafe Forums began sometime around August of 2003 and was quite well-attended for many years. By 2012, Facebook and Twitter were overwhelmingly dominating online personal interaction, and RF Cafe Forums activity dropped off precipitously. Regardless, there are still lots of great posts in the archive that ware worth looking at. Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts. Hi,

I've build a microstrip antenna with a probe feed. I've manufactured the antenna and decided to build a matching circuit. I've taken the antenna s-parameters from the network analyzer and put it into ADS. Then I've build a lumped matching circuit using a matching tool. After that I've replaced the calculated values with the closest values based on manufacturer's datasheets. After that I've manufactured the matching PCB circuit. However the results didn't match and now I'm trying to figure what's wrong. Maybe it's because I used a barrel interconnector to connect two female sma's. However, I don't know how can I get rid of it. Maybe there is a way I can integrate the probe into the circuit, like cutting the connector and soldering the pin to the circuit.

Hope you can help.

Thanks,

Neil

I'm sorry I can't help with your issue, (and presumably since it has been several months, you solved it already anyway), but I'm curious to know how you went about designing the matching circuits. I'm relatively new to RF design and I have a 2.4GHz transceiver I need to match to a balun but I haven't been able to find good information on how to do that. The 'optimal load impedance specified by the transceiver is something like 15 + j88 Ohm, and the baluns only shows input impedances of 50 Ohm, or 100 Ohm, 150 Ohm, etc.

You mentioned a matching tool. Is that software, hardware?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Angelo
