RF can apertures - RF Cafe Forums

RF Cafe Forums closed its virtual doors in late 2012 mainly due to other social media platforms dominating public commenting venues. RF Cafe Forums began sometime around August of 2003 and was quite well-attended for many years. By 2012, Facebook and Twitter were overwhelmingly dominating online personal interaction, and RF Cafe Forums activity dropped off precipitously. Regardless, there are still lots of great posts in the archive that ware worth looking at. Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts. Post subject: RF can apertures

I would like to calculate the maximum aperture size in a RF can to prevent RF energy @2.4GHz radiating through the can.

The can material is brass nickle plate fixed to a FR4 pcb.

I currently have apertures of 0.3mm X 2.5mm spaced along the bottom wall edges to thermally relieve the pcb contacts of the can.

Is this OK?

I have been told aperture dimensions should not exceed 0.6mm square before RF @2.4GHz sees the "gap" - in which case my existing can would fail to block the RF.

Can anyone please advise?
