1823: Roller skates (inline at that) were patented by Robert Tyers, a fruiter in Piccadilly, London. 1856: The first railroad train crossed the first railroad bridge over the Mississippi, between Rock Island, IL, and Davenport. 1864: Congress authorized the use of the phrase "In God We Trust" on U.S. coins. 1904: Robert Oppenheimer, the "Father" of the nuclear bomb, was born. 1914: Babe Ruth made his pitching debut with the Baltimore Orioles. 1924: A patent for a laminated padlock was issued to Harry Soref, who later founded Master Locks. 1933: Sir Henry Royce, half of the Rolls Royce team that builds automobiles and airplane engines, died. 1952: An atomic test conducted in Nevada became the first nuclear explosion shown on live network television. 1972: Apollo 16 astronauts John Young and Charles Duke walked and rode in the Lunar Rover on the surface of the moon for seven hours, 23 minutes. 1991: Intel released the 80486SX microprocessor.
