1449: The first known British patent was issued to John of Utynam for a method of making stained glass. 1827: German physicist Ernst Chladni, known as "the father of acoustics," died. 1829: James Carrington patented his coffee mill - a very important invention! 1860: Pony Express service was inaugurated in San Francisco; it lasted only a year and a half once the telegraph came online. 1948: President Truman signed the Economic Recovery Act, known as Marshall Plan, which allocated more than $5 billion in aid for 16 European countries. 1965: The SNAP 10 ion engine satellite became the first nuclear reactor to orbit Earth. 1973: The first portable phone (cellphone) call was placed by Motorola employee Martin Cooper on his 10"x3"x1.5", 30 oz DynaTAC "shoebox phone." 1996: Unabomber Theodore Kaczynski was arrested. 2000: the Nasdaq set a one-day record when it lost 349.15 points (before Bush was even elected).
