1841: Benjamin Franklin (BF) Goodrich was born. 1862: Richard Gatling received patent for his machine gun. 1873: first U.S. patent for a gold crown issued to Dr. John Beers of San Francisco, CA. 1879: Thomas Elkins patented a refrigerating apparatus designed for chilling or cooling food or corpses. 1880: James and John Ritty patented the first cash register. 1922: The entrance to King Tutankhamen's (King Tut) tomb was discovered. 1939: first air-conditioned automobile was exhibited by Packard Motor Co. of Detroit. 1979: Iranian Islamic militants (one of which is not president of Iran) seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 63 Americans hostage. 1980: Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmah Carter by a landslide.
