DeLorme's inReach™ Receives 2011 Best of What's New Honors from Popular Science
-- Groundbreaking satellite communicator enables two-way text messaging with delivery confirmation,
anywhere in the world.
New York, NY — November 16, 2011 — DeLorme, the
innovation leader in navigation technology, has been honored for its new inReach™ Satellite Communicator with a
Popular Science Best of What's New award. Popular Science annually awards 100 new products and technologies in 11
categories including: Automotive, Aviation & Space, Computing, Engineering, Gadgets, Green Tech, Home
Entertainment, Security, Home Tech, Health, and Recreation (inReach's category). Winners are featured in the
magazine's December issue.
The inReach is a personal communication device that, for the first time, offers affordable two-way satellite
communication, message delivery confirmation, remote tracking, and SOS emergency capability anywhere in the world.
It is now available from better retail and online outlets offering electronics or outdoor recreation gear.
At $249, inReach can serve as a standalone device, allowing pre-programmed messages and SOS alerts to be sent via
the device's pushbutton interface. When paired with either an Android phone or DeLorme's Earthmate PN-60w handheld
GPS, inReach delivers two-way messaging with family, friends, colleagues, or emergency responders.
Messages
are relayed by inReach to and from Iridium satellites, which make up the world's furthest-reaching communications
network. The inReach is built around the Iridium® 9602 short-burst data transceiver, enabling its global, two-way
connectivity. "For 24 years, Popular Science has honored the innovations that surprise and amaze us – those
that make a positive impact on our world today and challenge our views of what's possible in the future," said
Mark Jannot, Editor-in-Chief of Popular Science. "The Best of What's New Award is the magazine's top honor and the
100 winners – chosen from among thousands of entrants – represent the highest level of achievement in the field."
"It's truly an honor to have inReach recognized among so many exciting new products," Jim Skillings, DeLorme vice
president for commercial products. "We are thrilled with the positive feedback about inReach and this award is a
further validation of how DeLorme continues to push the innovation envelope."
The inReach has also received numerous other prestigious accolades including 2012 CES Innovations honors, a
National Geographic Adventure Fall Winter Gear of the Year award, and Outside Magazine Gear of the Show and
GearJunkie.com Best of Show awards from the industry-leading Outdoor Retailer Summer Market trade show.
