Radiotronix - Press Release 6-25-2007

Full FCC Certification Granted for Radiotronix New 250mW Long Range Embedded Radio Module

Please click here to visit the Radiotronix websiteRadiotronix 250mW Long Range Embedded Radio ModuleOklahoma City, OKLAHOMA - Radiotronix announced that full FCC and Industry Canada certification has been granted for its new long-range 250mW embedded wireless module. The certified modules come equipped with a core Wi.232FHSS-250- R™ embedded radio that features the new Analog Devices ADF7020 RF Transceiver chip. In addition, the radio is driven by a powerful protocol engine running on the C8051F311 microcontroller from Silicon Labs.

Radiotronix, a leader in high performance embedded radio modules, has a core family of modules which offer solutions for most RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 cable replacement applications in markets such as industrial, medical, transportation, oil and gas, wireless sensing, security, consumer and automatic meter reading (AMR).

The Wi.232FHSS-250-FCC-R™ module consists of a 1.2” x 1.2” Wi.232FHSS-250-R™ embedded module, a metal shield, a reverse polarity SMA connector, and a low drop out voltage regulator. It is pin compatible with all our other FCC and EVMs (evaluation modules), allowing for quick prototyping and rapid time-to-production. It comes in both straight and right angle versions for maximum user flexibility.

Because the module is fully self-contained, FCC authorized, and provided with an easyto- use pin header interface, it eliminates the complications normally involved with RF layout, FCC certification, and surface mount assembly.

The Wi.232DTS-FCC™ module has been pre-certified with different antennas to accommodate a broad spectrum of applications. The Wi.232FHSS-250-R™ modules combine a state-of-the-art, low power transceiver with a powerful multipoint-to-multipoint frequency-hopping-spread-spectrum (FHSS) protocol controller to form a complete wireless communication solution. Some of the new features include: Automatic Gain Control (AGC) with six intermediate gain steps and four module override settings, Variable Power Output Control with four steps from +8dBm to +23dBm output, and very useful new RSSI registers.

“Our new 250mW module family is some of the best products we have ever released at Radiotronix,” states Tom Hoyt, VP Sales and Marketing for Radiotronix. “The radio packs 250mW of output power in a small footprint and is designed for low cost. Our customer base requires reliable performance in some very challenging environments, such as communicating out of water pits for automatic meter reading for water meters to remote monitoring for oil and gas type of applications. We studied many of the pitfalls of current radios on the market today in these applications and added features to the new 250mW radios to address those issues.”

The Wi.232FHSS-250-R™ supports a wide range of data rates, allowing a designer to tune the module’s performance to meet the application’s throughput and range requirements. These modules employ frequency hopping spread spectrum modulation. Designers can program the module to use one of six hopping sequences. Additionally, the Wi.232FHSS-250-R™ module family supports four different addressing schemes: peer-to-peer, 32-bit user-assigned, 16-bit user-assigned, and MAC. User-assigned addressing modes incorporate masking to allow the formation of subnets. These techniques allow the Wi.232FHSS-250-R™ to operate co-located networks with minimal interference.

Modules are now available at all Radiotronix distributors.
