Job Description:

Engineer 2; Electrical Exempt Engineering 0204 3

  • Researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical components, RF equipment, RF systems, and satellite communications systems.
  • Designs electrical equipment, components and RF systems for commercial, industrial, and domestic purposes.
  • Uses standard procedures in carrying out assignments associated with research, design or development of specific parts, components, or minor phases of a project.
  • Coordinates with other technical personnel in solving technical problems, fabricating equipment, gathering information, formulating plans, designs, cost estimates and specifications.
  • Provides assistance to higher level engineers in most of the detail work and translates technical guidance and data received into usable information applicable to the particular assignment. Directs the work of lower level technical personnel as required.
  • Assists in compiling and preparing comprehensive technical reports and proposals.
  • May participate as a team member of multiple teams; may act as primary intra-organizational liaison.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • Performs varied technical assignments requiring the use of standard engineering principles, techniques and processes.
  • Understands some advanced concepts.
  • Resolves routine problems without assistance; requires assistance with non-routine problems.
  • Works on problems that are generally well-defined and occasionally repetitive.
  • May deal with several problems at the same time.
  • Solutions require review.
  • Applies a range of inputs to job performance; includes inputs from immediate supervisor and task requirements.
  • Directs or conducts research study necessary for the improvement or reconfiguration of RF systems or subsystems equipment after evaluation of available information.
  • Systems evaluation may includes antenna reflectors, feeds and other RF transmission components as well as antenna positioning components.
  • Investigates and makes decisions relative to significant problems in equipment performance, customer requirements and relations, and interpretation and application of all pertinent policies and specifications; may require travel between multiple locations or in support of system field installation.
  • Develops sections of, or complete, installation, maintenance, operation, troubleshooting, and repair procedures that reflect the latest concepts of information design for presentation as traditional training and/or technical documentation in accordance with technical specifications, program requirements and quality standards.
  • Prepares and conducts special reports and presentations pertinent to company products and services, field operations or other applications.
  • Ability to innovate solutions using available tools and resources and work experience. Specific contract requirements regarding education and experience will prevail.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in engineering or applied science with at least 1 year of related experience or 9 years directly related experience with formal electronics training.
  • CANDIDATE MUST POSSESS AND MAINTAIN A TSSI WITH FULL POLY CLEARANCE
  • 5 years experience with antenna testing in the 100 MHz to 100 GHz range
  • 1 year experience with spherical nearfield antenna measurement systems
  • 3 years mechanical experience operating saws, drill and hand tools
  • 1 year experience maintaining shielded doors, shielded access doors, lights and other test chamber fixtures
  • 3 years experience operating and maintaining hydraulic lifts
  • 5 years experience maintaining various electrical systems found in a anechoic chamber test facility
  • RF experience to include design, testing, trouble shooting and documentation of systems and associated components

GSFC-TV Associate Engineer III

  • Receives instructions, equipment requirements, and advice from supervisor or engineer as needed.  Performs assignments that are not completely standardized or prescribed.
  • Builds, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and calibration of equipment and systems.
  • Reads blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematic drawings, and engineering instructions for assembling equipment.
  • Constructs components, subunits, or simple models or adapts standard equipment. May troubleshoot and correct malfunctions.
  • Follows specific layouts and diagrams to construct and package simple devices and subunits of equipment.
  • Selects, sets up, and operates standard test equipment and records test data.
  • Tests equipment, using standard test equipment and procedures, and analyzes results to evaluate performance.  Determines if adjustments to equipment are necessary.  Makes minor modifications in test setups or procedures as appropriate.
  • Assists in design modification by compiling data related to the design, specifications, and materials needed.
  • Gathers information on parts or equipment concerning previous operational failures and modifications.

Basic Qualifications:

Education:  AS degree in Engineering Technology or related field, or military technical training program, or completion of technical institute program.

 

Experience: 

  • At least 4 years of related experience or in lieu of educational requirements at least 8 years of related experience.
  • The applicant should have a strong RF background.
  • The applicant should have experience working on CATV Headends and distribution systems.
  • Periodic, extended shift work (during shuttle missions) is required.
  • The applicant must be physically able to install and terminate co-axial cables, carry and use various sizes and types of ladders, cable reel holders, test equipment, etc.
  • The applicant must be able to operate and understand various types of test equipment (RF level meters, spectrum analyzers, time domain reflectometers, etc. associated with CATV installations.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience in CAD or VISIO is desirable.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Power Point is highly desirable.
  • A background in broadcast television is highly desirable but not mandatory.
