RF Design Engineer

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for designing and building electronic and RF circuits with minimal supervision. Designs will include low-power narrowband and spread spectrum RF circuits operating in the 260MHz-2.4GHz ranges. Will research and specify components, then create schematics and multi-layered PCB layouts using standard software. Will test and qualify designs, then document and transition them into high-volume production. Will work with customers on customized products and create custom specifications.

Qualifications

Must possess all necessary skills to take an RF design from concept to production. Must have experience with narrowband and spread spectrum radio designs and a strong applied knowledge of the test and qualification of base-band, digital, and RF circuits. Should be able to research and identify components appropriate to meet design objectives and plan and execute designs to meet engineering targets. Should be familiar with all equipment necessary to prove and test a design. Hands-on skills such as soldering of fine-pitch components, troubleshooting, and characterization measurements are a must. Experience with RF PCB layout using CAD tools, such as Protel, would be beneficial. Candidate must be both technically qualified and able to interface well in a close-knit, non-competitive team environment. The duties of this position would generally be reflected by a MSEE or BSEE with 5+ years of experience; however, industry experience will be considered if it has resulted in an equivalent skill set.

Designs range from tiny low-power narrowband RF modules to higher power spread spectrum RF circuits operating in the 260MHz-2.4GHz ranges. Will research and specify components, then create schematics and multi-layered PCB layouts using standard software. Will test and qualify designs, then document and transition them into high-volume production. Will design test fixtures and procedures for production testing of products. Will troubleshoot and pursue corrective actions for any production issues. Will also work on the development of mechanical designs, such as enclosures. Will document all aspects of designs for internal archive as well as instructions for production. Will work with customers on customized products and create custom specifications. Will assist and mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications

Must have a strong theoretical knowledge of RF concepts coupled with a history of successful practical application. Must have experience with both narrowband and spread spectrum radio designs and prior experience in the test and qualification of base-band, digital, and RF circuits. Should be able to research and identify components appropriate to meet design objectives and plan and execute designs to meet engineering targets. Should be familiar with all equipment necessary to prove and test a design. Must have solid understanding of RF theory such as transmission lines, matching and harmonics. Should understand antenna function and the various requirements thereof. Knowledge of Legal requirements such as FCC part 15.231.247, and 249 will be of benefit. Hands-on skills such as soldering of fine-pitch components, troubleshooting, and characterization measurements are a must. Experience with PCB layout using CAD tools, such as Protel, would be beneficial. Should be adept at technical writing.
