8 way power divider at U band(40-60GHz) - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Hi, everyone,
I want to design a 8 way power divider working at U band with 10% bandwidth because I cannot find a commercial one for such high freqency. But as the frequency increases, there are many problems, such as the size due to fabrication limitation. So if anyone who has some idea on how to design it, could you help me?
Thank you very much!

Lu

Hi Luyang,

I designed a MMIC 4-way wilkinson power divider around 35 GHz - normal design. The bandwidth should not be a problem, wilkinson is reasonably broadband. Keep the lines far apart and tune the lenghts to get a good isolation in the desired band.

I think if you use a thick substrate, you may be able to have wider lines for fabrication.

Hi, thank you very much for your reply. But I have some questions. First, what is the dielectric contant of the subtrate in your design? Second, did you follow the general design rule for Wilkinson power divider or is there any trick?
Thank you very much!

Hi,

I used GaAs, dielectric contant of 12.9 on a 100um substrate. Design is fairly the same. Since you will be routing the 2 arms (for a 2way PD), the bends will add some length, so your total length will be little less than quarter wavelength. Remember it was a MMIC design, I dont know if there will be some issues if you do a hybrid MIC design.
