Modulation index for ASK modulation - RF Cafe Forums

The original RF Cafe Forums were shut down in late 2012 due to maintenance issues - primarily having to spend time purging garbage posts from the board. At some point I might start the RF Cafe Forums again if the phpBB software gets better at filtering spam.

Below are the old forum threads, including responses to the original posts.

Hello,

Can anyone elaborate about the modulation index for ASK modulation. I tried to look for it in Google but couldn't find out a clear information.

Thank you all.

The modulation index for AM (and ASK is a subset of AM) is more often called the modulation percentage, but given as a straight number.

Some formulas:
MI = (Vmax - Vcarrier)/Vcarrier
MI = (Vmax - Vmin)/(Vmax + Vmin)

So the most common form of ASK, On-Off Keying, has an index of 1.

Good Luck!
Fred
