Running Out of IP Addresses

If 3G catches on too quickly, we might be in trouble. 3G devices require unique IP addresses. With only a finite number of IP addresses available using the current IPv4 scheme, the next generation of IP addressing is hotly under development. Known as IPv6 (where's version 5?), it is the protocol mandated by the 3GPP for W-CDMA, and is an option for 2.5G and GPRS. Japan and Europe have a year-2005 IPv6 roadmap in place. North America has none even though nearly all the world's IP technology leaders are in the U.S. Go figure!
