MMIC Solutions MMIC Solutions Ships World’s Smallest MMW Receiver
MSi200 range of 100GHz receivers has wide range of applications in people screening systems for security and
theft prevention
Ledbury, UK. 23rd July 2009 - MMIC Solutions Ltd. has announced
first commercial shipments of the world’s smallest millimetre wave receivers to security imaging customers in both
Europe and the USA.
Millimetre waves (MMW) penetrate most fabrics, enabling detection of weapons, explosives and contraband concealed
under clothing.
Unlike conventional metal detectors, MMW imaging can detect both conventional metallic and
non-metallic threats such as ceramic or plastic weapons, explosives and drugs. Unlike X-ray scanning, threat
detection can be achieved by receiving naturally occurring millimetre waves, without transmitting radiation and
without the privacy concerns common with transmitting systems.
MMW people screening systems are now being
deployed in many courthouses, prisons, airports, and other critical infrastructure locations. These systems can
also be used to eliminate theft of high value merchandise in warehouses etc.
MMW receivers are
traditionally built using metal machined to high tolerances and are the most expensive component of MMW people
screening systems. An array of perhaps more than 100 is needed for high-resolution MMW images. MMIC Solutions’
technology allows the use of low cost circuit board materials and automated manufacture at 100GHz, which provides
substantial savings in cost and size compared to the conventional approach.
Lower-cost people screening
systems capable of detecting the latest non-metallic threats have major implications for the security field. They
can be much more widely deployed, at potential target venues such as buildings, sporting stadiums, and even
shopping malls. Vehicle mounted and handheld screening by security professionals is also a likely next step. In
addition, a tightly packed array of small receivers delivers higher resolution and enhanced detection performance.
The MSi200 series modules are direct detection receivers offering industry leading performance; operating from
less than 80GHz to more than 100GHz, with excellent sensitivity. The receiver modules use patented technology; a
multi-layer substrate incorporating the millimetre-wave waveguide interface. They are also only 8.4mm wide ideal
for use in tightly packed receiver arrays for high-resolution imaging. MMIC Solutions also provides supporting
solutions for feed-horn antennas and interface circuits.
Rodger Sykes, MMIC Solutions’ President and CEO
said, “The new MSi200 series of receivers offer world-class performance, and we’re delighted to have been designed
in by several security imaging customers in the USA and Europe. We see substantial worldwide growth over the next
few years for people screening equipment based on millimetre wave technology”.
