It is an undeniable maxim that when a field of study is adopted
by hobbyists, the rate of progress accelerates significantly. Not
many examples are as obvious as with amateur radio (Ham) enthusiasts.
I have had the honor of working with many top-notch engineers and
technicians in my nearly 30 years in electronics, and without a
doubt, a lot of the very best were Hams. That is not to say there
are not any top-notch electrical engineers that do not indulge in
the hobby, there are. The difference is that the Ham radio guys
typically exhibit an enthusiasm that is not so overtly apparent
in the non-Hams. Where the Amateur radio folks typically shine is
when they are in positions that do not normally require a talent
for RF knowledge. Whether that be as a project manager, a mechanical
engineer, or software guy, one more than one occasion I have seen
one of them throw out an idea during a brainstorming session that
saved the moment. My hat is off to them.
