 Measurement of the Phase Difference Between
Several Signals
Many applications require a defined magnitude and phase relation between several
signals, for example, to design a smart antenna array and its distribution network,
or to ensure accurate phase alignment between different transmitter or receiver
chains of T/R modules. Magnitude can be measured with spectrum analyzers or power
meters. For phase measurements, a vector network analyzer is the easiest, fastest
and most accurate instrument This application note shows how to measure the phase
accurately between several signals using vector network analyzers.

Mixers and converters are key components in all RF and microwave systems. They
are used in wireless communication systems for commercial applications such as Wi-Fi
and cellular networks; as well as radars and complex navigation systems used in
defense and aerospace applications. Mixers are used in receivers to downconvert
high frequency signals captured from antennas; and in transmitters to upconvert
baseband signals to higher frequencies for transmissions. They are a critical component
for determining the overall performance of a system with parameters such as gain,
linearity, dynamic range, and particularly spurious response.
