Anritsu Company has developed the new
Compact Antenna Test Range (CATR) Anechoic Chamber 2 MA8172B configuration
for its New Radio RF Conformance Test System ME7873NR to support 5G millimetre
wave (mmWave) 2 Angle of Arrival (2 AoA) Radio Resource Management (RRM) tests.
Anritsu’s MA8172B solution is unique in industry as it is based on hybrid of IFF
(Indirect Far Field) and DFF (Direct Far Field) test methodologies and this
really helps customer save real estate space. A solution based on all DFF or IFF
will be bulky and expensive. Anritsu helps in providing value to customer by
making this new solution lower cost, smaller footprint, upgradable, and serve
multiple test areas. Evaluating UE communications quality and connection
stability during handovers between base stations is a difficult technical
challenge for mmWave mobile communications. Consequently, Anritsu has developed
its MA8172B upgrade model for the Over-the-Air (OTA) CATR...

Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his December 2022 newsletter that
features his short op-ed entitled "The Resurgence of
Microwave Directed Energy Weapons." The premise of directed energy (DE) weapons
is to blast RF/microwave energy at a specific frequency or band of frequencies at
a high enough power to confuse or totally disable drones and/or missiles while in
flight, before reaching their intended targets. Sam argues reasonably that the relatively
low power and aiming requirements of a microwave directed energy system can be much
more effective than a high power laser beam that must be aimed and track the target
precisely enough to make surface contact. An RF system can make multiple "shots"
in the same time required for a laser power supply to recharge between shots. A
great example of how DE works can be seen in this decade-old video of an Active
Denial System use to disperse unruly crowds. The targets are humans, but the reactions
are analogous to how radio receivers are affected...

Axiom Test Equipment, an electronic test
equipment rental and sales company has published a new press release entitled "Tracking
Testers for Radars & Communications Systems," that explains how ideal signal
sources for testing communications and radar equipment should combine high performance
with versatility. Communications systems transfer information between locations
while radars search for targets. A quick review of the essential differences between
communications and radar systems can help target the types of test equipment with
the capabilities needed to optimize the performance of each type of electronic system.
The types of signals used in communications and radar systems are as diverse as
the types of systems themselves. Communications systems range from short-range wireless
Bluetooth links, such as between a computer and printer, and more complex 5G wireless
networks with billions of users worldwide. Radars are now used in all markets, from
automotive safety to weather forecasting, with signals covering a wide range of
power levels...
Copper Mountain Technologies (CMT) has a
whitepaper available entitled, "Near
and Far Field Measurement." It begins, "To obtain optimal performance in an
over the air RF system, the antennas must be chosen to meet specific requirements.
Performance parameters such as size, wind-loading, environmental ruggedness, transmission
pattern, bandwidth, and power handling capability should be considered. Especially
important in an RF system design is the 'link budget.' This parameter determines
the end-to-end RF loss and is affected by transmitter output power, feedline loss,
transmit antenna gain, path loss through the air, receiver antenna gain, feedline
loss once again and receiver noise-figure among other factors. A failure to meet
the link budget in an RF system design will result in noisy performance and loss
of coverage. In this application note, methods of measuring the transmission (or
reception) pattern which determines antenna gain with a VNA will be examined. Most
antennas possess some directionality to their performance..."
Copper Mountain Technologies (CMT) has a
webinar coming up in league with Eravant as part of our VNA 101 Bootcamp Webinar

Tips & Tricks." The CMT vector network analyzer software has a lot of features
and capabilities. During this session, we will review some aspects of the software
in more detail to help users understand how to get the most out of the software.
This is a follow-on to the previous "Fixture Requirements to Accurately De-Embed
DUTs from VNA Measurements" Webinar. Automatic Fixture Removal software may be used
to remove the effects of fixtures from the measurement of a Device Under Test. It's
fast and easy to use, but it is imperative to understand the extent to which fixture-related
measurement impairments may be compensated. During this webinar, we will review
the possible pitfalls during de-embedding and measurement of a DUT on a fixture...
Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his November 2022 newsletter that
features his short op-ed entitled "Face Reality: Level 5 Vehicle Autonomy Won't
Be Here Anytime Soon." A definition of Level 5 on the level5auto.com website
declares thus: "Level 5 driving is full driving automation. That is, the car's systems
can accomplish every part of the dynamic driving task (DDT). They can also monitor
all of the vehicle's surroundings and make predictions about what the objects in
the space around it will do next. Further, the car can do this anywhere. The systems
are no longer confined to a limited operational design domain (ODD). And, finally,
the car operates without the expectation or need for a human to ever take over driving
- even in the case of a system failure." The scheme requires not only perfect AI
(artificial intelligence), but perfectly functioning electronics processors, sensors,
and control over the car's throttle, steering, and brakes. That's a pretty tall
order. As Sam notes, if any monitoring and/or intervention by the human occupant
is required, then Level 5 has not been achieved. Level 5 may well be an
asymptote of the vehicle autonomy curve...

test equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post entitled "Weighing
the Benefits of Benchtop vs. USB Based Test Equipment," that explains the differences
between benchtop and USB based test equipment to identify the best option for a
user's project. The most glaring difference between USB-controlled units and standard
benchtop units is usually size. A USB unit fits next to a laptop computer on a small
desk while a benchtop unit occupies the better part of a laboratory work area or
6U or more of a standard 19-in.-wide test equipment rack. Another difference between
a USB unit and a traditional benchtop unit is the computer. For USB equipment, the
computer is part of the test setup, whereas for a benchtop unit, it is an option...

Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his October 2022 newsletter that
features his short op-ed entitled "It's Getting Crowded
in Low Earth Orbit," where he discusses the rapidly increasing number of both
operational and non-operational satellites in low earth orbit (LEO). It presents
both a physical space crowding problem and an RF spectrum crowding problem. Companies
like Anatech help with the RF crowding by designing and building filters to mitigate
the presence of nearby signals. Companies like ClearSpace SA (Switzerland)
are working the physical space crowding issue by designing and building grappling
bot satellites which will grab a satellite (or large debris) and drag it to a lower
orbit for atmospheric re-entry. I wonder what the carbon footprint is of a launch
vehicle needed to get the bot aloft...

Axiom Test Equipment, Inc., an electronic
test equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post entitled,
"Teaming
Amplifiers and Signal Generators," that explains how connecting a suitable amplifier
to a signal generator can be boosted to the power levels needed in a project. Signal
generators serve as sources of analog, digital, and even RF/microwave signals for
test purposes. They may not always deliver enough output power for some tests, such
as characterizing filters and antennas, and help may be needed. By connecting a
suitable amplifier, a signal generator can be boosted to the required power levels.
Finding the right combination comes down to knowing the key specifications for both
units. Laboratory amplifiers can be specified by frequency range, bandwidth, output
power, and gain...
