Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his July 2023 newsletter that features
his short op-ed entitled "Another Annoyance
for Radio Astronomers." In it, Sam discusses a subject I have highlighted a
few times, which is the interference issues being caused by the massive satellite
constellations being deployed around the Earth. Between Starlink (SpaceX) and Project
Kuiper (Amazon), Guo Wang (China), and Europe planning one of its own, as many as
100,000 satellites ultimately (maybe more, with >4,000 already deployed), many
in low Earth orbit (LEO), could be blocking radio frequency, infrared, visible light,
ultraviolet, and x-ray information from cleanly reaching terrestrial astronomy telescopes.
Ingenuous solutions to mitigating scintillation effects of the atmosphere have been
devised, but no similar method can be used for satellite interference. Sam's write-up
has to do specifically with the newly discovered RFI being created from the satellites
themselves - it appears in bands specifically reserved for radio astronomy. As you
know, uncorrelated inband interference is very difficult to mitigate...

Antenova Ltd, the UK-based manufacturer of
antennas and RF antenna modules for M2M and the IoT, has published a whitepaper
entitled, "A
Guide to Matching Circuits, Transmission Lines and Antenna Tuning." It begins:
"Designs thrive in environments with the least restrictions and minimal risk of
product failure. Part of creating a product is analysing the risk associated with
individual components, identifying and selecting the ones with the most desirable
functions. Wireless antennas are not like these other electronic components. Whilst
you can predict antenna performance to a certain level, it is highly likely you
will face serious compromise if you choose to integrate it at the latter stages
of development. Antenna performance is wholly a product of the operating environment.
In every different scenario, the performance of an antenna will vary - be that in
free space or whilst embedded within...

Axiom Test Equipment, an electronic test
equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post entitled "Spectrum
Analyzers Help Find Harmful Interference," that helps users find a spectrum
analyzer with the functionality needed to simplify interference hunting in a desired
frequency range. The growing number of wireless applications and signals creates
increased opportunities for interference when signals are not properly monitored.
When interference does take place, it degrades system performance and inevitably
must be detected and eliminated. This requires spectrum monitoring and interference
hunting with the right tools and the best equipment for that job is the spectrum
analyzer. With a spectrum or signal analyzer teamed with a suitable antenna, it
is usually possible to detect and measure a source of RF interference. By measuring
as many as the signals within a frequency range of interest, such as around 2.4 GHz
for Bluetooth and wireless local area network (WLAN) signals and any additional,
unwanted signals, potential interference can be detected and displayed with a spectrum
analyzer...

of 30 dB (typ.) up to 2 GHz ensures minimal undesired reflections and
amplitude ripple...
San Francisco Circuits, a popular provider
of PCB fabrication and assembly, has published a
PCB Insertion
Loss Guide. The term "Insertion loss" typically refers to the loss of signal
strength as it passes through system-level cabling / components and PCB-level traces
within high-speed (3 GHz+) systems / optical fibers and PCB stack-ups. When
designing new PCBs, it's important to mitigate loss, typically expressed in decibels
(dB), as it can lead to critical system failures if left unchecked. San Francisco
Circuits has created a new resource to assist PCB designers with the best practices
surrounding PCB Insertion loss. The causes and contributors to insertion loss include
overall transmission length, connectors & cables, high-loss materials, and higher
frequency systems. How each affects a system overall along with tips on how to combat
insertion loss are detailed...

Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his May 2023 newsletter that features
his short op-ed entitled "Filters Save the Day."
In it, Sam discusses how two of the biggest issues of the day concerning RF interference
- the coexistence of C-band cellphone service and radar altimeters, and AM radio
in electric vehicles - are relatively easily solved with filters. I have posted
links to many news stories covering both challenges in the last few years. Sam makes
a good point about the AM radio in EV's, that being whereas car manufacturers say
the noise generated by the propulsion systems (brushless motors which run on high
frequency pulses) will wreak havoc with AM radio, there will certainly be other
susceptibilities needing to be dealt with by onboard systems. I will add that dense
urban environments filled with EMI-spewing EV's might also cause serious problems
for external systems as the ambient noise floor rises ever higher...

Axiom Test Equipment, an electronic test
equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post that covers how
high-speed oscilloscopes with on-board spectrum analysis capability can be a more
efficient testing approach. Traditionally, testing in the time and frequency domains
meant separate signal paths and separate units. An oscilloscope shows signals in
the time domain while a spectrum analyzer shows signals in the frequency domain.
However, a more efficient approach - and a less crowded test bench - can be achieved
using a high-speed oscilloscope with on-board spectrum analysis capability. That
way, it is possible to have multiple looks at a signal of interest with a single
unit. Specifying a
combination oscilloscope/spectrum analyzer requires defining performance ranges
for the two units, so that each will deliver the capabilities needed for a targeted
set of test applications. For an oscilloscope, this typically includes the number
of measurement channels, bandwidth per channel, sample rate, vertical bit resolution,
trigger level range, time base range, noise floor, and acceptable jitter. For a
spectrum analyzer, it is number of channels, frequency range, acquisition bandwidth
range, frequency resolution...

Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his May 2023 newsletter that features
his short op-ed entitled "Z-Axis Positioning
Finally Arrives," which discusses the FCC's "Wireless E911 Location Accuracy
Requirements" mandate for providing altitude information from the point an emergency
assistance call is placed. It says in part, "...requires nationwide wireless providers
to deploy z-axis technology nationwide by April 3, 2025." It is not a trivial requirement
since cell tower triangulation and even embedded GPS sensors cannot provide altitude
(z-axis) position precisely enough to pinpoint floor-level location. The FCC wants
to know what floor of a building from which the call originates. Sam mentions NextNav's
Pinnacle system that uses a precision barometric pressure sensor in the phone, tablet,
computer, etc., to provide the altitude information. After reviewing available info
on Pinnacle, I don't see how a pressure sensor can provide floor-level height without
a very nearby reference pressure sensor at some fixed, known height to compare readings.
Ambient barometric pressure is constantly changing, so a referenceless reading is
practically useless. Pilots always calibrate their altimeters (barometers calibrated
to read out in units of height) at a point on the airport where the altitude is
know...

Axiom Test Equipment, Inc., an electronic
test equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog post entitled "How to Test Cables &
Antennas Together in 2023" that covers how testing antennas and cables as an
integrated assembly can reveal a great deal about how they will work together within
their system. A variety of measurements can help characterize antennas with cables
and some of the latest test tools can deliver those measurements when and where
needed. Diverse types of tests, such as frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) or
time domain reflectometry (TDR) measurements, can confirm continuous impedance in
a signal path formed by antennas and cables. These measurements check for reflections
coming along the signal path, using continuous broadband frequency signals in FDR
and pulsed signals in TDR. Test units capable of FDR and TDR measurements can isolate
problems along the antenna/cable signal path, such as loose or worn connectors.
Such measurements can provide information about the distance to a fault...

Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his April 2023 newsletter that features
his short op-ed entitled "Havana Syndrome:
Case Closed," which discusses where the U.S. government recently declared their
investigation into the mysterious neurological issues some foreign embassy staff
had been reporting showed that use of a microwave emitter to induce maladies was
"very unlikely." Keep in mind that conclusion was brought to you by the same type
government jackbooted thugs who brought you "safe and effective" vaccines. Sam,
as do I, believes just because government investigators have declared the "conspiracy
theories" to be unfounded, it does not remove the possibility of radiation poisoning
