pSemi Intros Free "sNp Viewer" Software

sNp Viewer Software by pSemi - RF CafeDave Watling , of pSemi, went me a note about the company's new "sNp Viewer" multiport s-parameter plotting software that is available for free downloading on the pSemi website. It is provided as an executable installation file that installs the Runtime Vee framework for the program. Look for the sNp Viewer icon to appear on your desktop (not in the Start menu) when installation is complete. You can drag the icon into the Start menu afterwards. My guess is this was an tool developed for internal use by the engineering staff and it turned out so well that they decided to make it available to everyone. The example screen shot at the right uses the pSemi* PE42430 UltraCMOS® SP3T Reflective RF Switch, which is a 4-port device with a .s4p data file extension. I wanted to use a device with more than just two ports. The plots would get really busy ...

QuinStar Technology T-Shirt

QuinStar Technology T-Shirt - RF CafeIf you visited the good folks at the QuinStar Technology booth at the IMS show in Boston this year (2019), you were probably offered one of the T-shirts shown here. As you might expect from a company of engineers and scientists, the design on the T-shirt includes a thinking exercise. Rumor has it that this is the first question put to interviewees. Can you decode the license plate message? I asked Ms. Carol Clasby, who probably handed you your T-shirt at IMS2019 (if you got one), whether someone at QuinStar actually has the license plate and she responded not yet, but maybe in the near future. I went to the California Department of Transportation website to see what such a license plate might look like. It allowed me to reserve the plate, although of course ...

Inspired by the richness of late-spring, we decided to launch this bi-monthly newsletter, to help keep everyone informed of all the exciting developments going on here at Cobham Antenna Systems (CAS), in Newmarket, UK. In this issue, the first of many to come, we cover our presence at two recent key industry exhibitions: AUVSI / Xponential 2019 in Chicago, USA, and EW-E 2019 in Stockholm, Sweden. At these shows we introduced a new antenna that is designed specifically for C-UAS (that is, Counter-Unmanned Airborne Systems). We also take a look at how we are helping Professor Alan Wilson ...

Custom MMIC Intros 18 to 40 GHz K-, Ka-Band LNA

Custom MMIC Intros 18 to 40 GHz K-, Ka-Band LNAThe CMD299 is a highly efficient GaAs MMIC low noise amplifier ideally suited for EW and communications systems where small size and low power consumption are needed. The device is optimized for 30 GHz and delivers greater than 17 dB of gain with a corresponding noise figure of 3.5 dB and output 1 dB compression point of +7 dBm. The CMD299 is a 50 ohm matched design which eliminates the need for external DC blocks and RF port matching. The CMD299 offers full passivation for increased reliability and moisture protection ...

3D Smith Chart High Frequency Circuit Design

3D Smith Chart High Frequency Circuit Design (PRIME 2019) - RF CafeAndrei Muller, of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne will present his 3D Smith Chart software during the PRIME 2019 event on Monday, July 15th. The talk will start by presenting the mathematics behind the Smith chart and extended 2D Smith chart from the group theory of geometry point of view (Kleinian view of geometry). Using the Maxime Bochert-Klein results on Mobius transformations (among which the Smith chart constitutive equation belongs). The introduction will show what happens by applying the voltage reflection coefficient transformation and power wave reflection coefficient transformation on the grid of the impedance plane, random geometrical objects and photos. The geometry of these mappings will be then compared with the geometry of other scattering parameters mappings when applied to the same objects ...

Women in Engineering Scholarship Podcast

Women in Engineering Scholarship Podcast (IMS 2019) - RF CafeListen in on our latest news as our very own CEO Paul Blount proudly presents Custom MMIC's Women in Engineering scholarship last Wednesday, June 5th 2019 at the International Microwave Symposium in Boston. In this quick podcast, meet the first three recipients of the scholarship: Sarah McKinley, Emma Fournier and Grace Remillard. Blount describes each of the women as "so talented."

Advanced MMICs Aid in Reducing Size and Power in Phased Array Radar Systems

Advanced MMICs Aid in Reducing Size and Power in Phased Array Radar Systems - RF CafeCustom MMIC, a leading designer and manufacturer of high performance monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs), has posted a new blog entry entitled, "Advanced MMICs Aid in Reducing Size and Power in Phased Array Radar Systems." Phased-array radar systems are important instruments in national electronic defense strategies. From the large, ship-based systems that scan for distantly launched missiles to the more compact arrays installed on fighter aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), electronic phased-array radars come in many sizes and forms, providing reliable signal detection and identification. These modern systems offer many advantages over earlier radar ...

Investigating Inverters as Part of a Solar Array

Investigating Inverters as Part of a Solar Array - RF CafeAxiom Test Equipment, an electronic test equipment rentals and sales company headquartered in North County San Diego, has published a blog post entitled, "Investigating Inverters as Part of a Solar Array," which discusses the technical and test requirements for the subject. Solar power supplies are being used for remote and/or unmanned communications and data collection and reporting locations across the globe, and careful attention must be paid to component selection. RF Cafe visitor Joe Cahak published a great whitepaper entitled, "Solace in Solar," that provides a detailed look at his personal solar power installation project. Sophisticated test equipment is required ...

Temperature Chamber Choices

Temperature Chamber Choices (TotalTemp Technologies) - RF CafeJohn Booher, at TotalTemp Technologies has posted a blog entitled, "Temperature Chamber Choices." Thermal testing testing of products can't be ignored. Knowing your product stands up to the harshest environments it will be exposed to over the life of the product provides proof of the design and verified quality. With TotalTemp's Temperature Chambers and Thermal Platforms you can most effectively run thermal tests for burn-in or design / production verification. Products meant for consumers have to be tested, but it's safe to say, products going into space need far more rigorous verification. Life tests or inappropriate tests can go too far, thus shortening the life so it is important to ensure the proper testing is performed ...

Rohde & Schwarz 5G NR Tour Resources

Rohde & Schwarz 5G NR Tour Resources - RF CafeThis month we ended our 5G NR Tour visiting over 10 cities across the US and Canada. Below for your reference are the slides to the different tracks, as well as other resources that you can request and/or download. If you would like to be one of the first to know when our 5G eBook center is launched, follow the link and complete the form to be added to our communications list. The 5G New Radio eBook from Rohde & Schwarz describes all relevant details of the 5G NR technology - the fundamentals and procedures. More importantly, it takes into account the relevant implementation aspects since test and measurement equipment is required to develop, manufacture and service 5G NR products. This eBook ...
