Axiom Test Equipment, an electronic test
equipment rental and sales company has published a very unique and helpful new blog
post entitled "Believe
in the Benefits of Bidirectional Power Supplies." A bi-directional DC power
supply makes it possible to evaluate how changes on supply voltage, current, or
power affect the performance of a device under test. A bidirectional DC power supply
is often used in CV or CC mode to simulate a rechargeable battery for a device under
test, to better understand how a device or circuit will operate when its voltage
fluctuates or drops below its nominal operating current or power level. With its
bidirectional capabilities a regenerative DC power supply simplifies testing of
such components as motor inverters, batteries, bidirectional on-board chargers (BOBCs),
and bidirectional DC-to-DC converters without having to switch connections when
testing the reverse current as with a conventional DC power supply...

Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his February 2022 newsletter that
features his short op-ed entitled "Wi-Fi HaLow
Takes Aim at Long-Range IoT," where he points out a serious limitation to the
evolving mm-wave craze that is synonymous with 5G and 6G (a major component of IoT).
The super wide bandwidths available with mm-wave are great, but the familiar Friis
equation governing free space path loss shows that power at the receiver (PRx) decreases
at a rate of 20 dB per decade as frequency increases. Wi-Fi HaLow operates
in the sub-1 GHz realm, so it naturally (literally) has a longer range than even
the 2.4 and 5 GHz ISM band WiFi systems. Also included in this newsletter are a
few stories on industry happenings like the FCC mandating specific specification
labels for WiFi products and mm-wave shoe screening at airports (underwear screening
comes next)...
San Francisco Circuits (SFC) has launched
a new industry focus practice, highlighting PCB fabrication and assembly for high-tech
industries. The first details
PCB production for the medical and device/instrumentation industry. The
new industry focus page on medical PCB fabrication and assembly covers common use
cases, best practices, capabilities, testing/inspection guidelines, and industry
standards. Medical device standards are important to consider when working with
a PCB supplier. The largest governing bodies of medical device standards includes
the IEC, ISO, the FDA, and the FCC. Typically, all medical devices will be compliant
with ISO 13485 (used by organizations involved in the design, production, installation
and servicing of medical devices. ISO 13485 is the FDA's mandatory quality management
system for medical devices)...

Copper Mountain Technologies is pleased
to announce an online event coming up as part of our VNA Master Class Webinar series:
"Non-Destructive
Microwave Evaluation of Radome Performance." Hosted by Copper Mountain Technologies
and Compass Technology Group, the webinar will be taking place on Wednesday, February 23,
2022 at 10:00 AM ET. Radomes can experience defects due to wear or impact
events that degrade both mechanical and electromagnetic performance. Traditional
radome testing often resorts to the crude "tap test" where an operator listens for
sound changes with a tapping coin to detect defects. CTG has developed new and improved
methods that integrate rugged microwave sensors and Copper Mountain's portable VNAs
to significantly improve diagnostic testing of radomes. This webinar will provide
a brief overview of the theory of microwave NDE methods for radome characterization.
We will then demonstrate both handheld and robotic testing of radomes...

Axiom Test Equipment, an electronic test
equipment rental and sales company has published a new blog entitled "Thermal
Chambers Boost Electronic Device Reliability," that informs people on the different
thermal chambers that can be used as part of a practical environmental test strategy.
This is vital when designing electronic devices for use over wide operating temperature
ranges. Depending upon their capabilities, thermal chambers can perform as many
as three types of temperature-based testing: thermal cycling, thermal shock, and
burn-in testing. When it comes to finding a suitable thermal test chamber for a
particular device under test, it's a matter of matching the capabilities of a thermal
test chamber to those test requirements. All in all, thermal chambers are typically
compared in terms of test volume, temperature range, the rates over which temperatures
can change, how tightly the temperature is controlled...

Sam Benzacar of Anatech Electronics, an
RF and microwave filter company, has published his January 2022 newsletter that
features his short op-ed entitled "AM Radio Is Not Dead. Yet.," where he surveys
the current AM landscape including listener demographics, current technology, and
FCC regulations. As a lifelong AM listener myself, I definitely fit into the age-60-ish
typical adherent, and talk radio is my primary daytime programming preference. In
the evenings I switch over to FM music stations. Over the air broadcasting is also
still my choice, and my radios typically use dials connected to variable capacitors
- no electronic pushbutton tuning. Most AM and FM stations also offer Internet-based
access, where all of the static, fading, and other forms of signal degradation are
eliminated. Truthfully, those "annoyances" are nostalgia to my 64-year-old ears,
so I don't mind needing to occasionally reorient an antenna or tweak the dial a
bit for good reception. Sam believes - probably correctly - that AM radio will be
gone by the end of this decade. The way things are going, I'll be gone by then as
well, so hopefully AM broadcasts will hold on just a little while longer...

Axiom Test Equipment, an electronic test
equipment rental and sales company has published a very unique and helpful new blog
post entitled "Make Older
Gear Work When New Test Equipment Cannot Be Found." Since the beginning of the
COVID plandemic two years ago, everything from housing to cars to food to medical
care has been increasingly difficult and expensive. Test Equipment and other electronics
items have not been spared during this time. This article informs people on the
different alternatives available to them due to today's global supply chain challenges
