Electronics-Themed Comics
November 1964 Radio-Electronics

November 1961 Radio-Electronics Cover - RF Cafe[Table of Contents]

Wax nostalgic about and learn from the history of early electronics. See articles from Radio-Electronics, published 1930-1988. All copyrights hereby acknowledged.

These three electronics-themed comics appeared in the November 1961 issue of Radio-Electronics magazine. I have to admit to not quite "getting" the one on page 80. The 6BR8 vacuum tube is a triode-pentode, meaning it had both a single grid (triode) and a triple grid (pentode) amplifier contained within the same envelope. They share a common heater element, but have separate, isolated cathodes. Maybe you need to have lived through the era to know the insider's joke. The page 52 comic is one you can relate to if you have ever needed to pull a hot tube from a socket while troubleshooting a chassis. I did that many times while working on our group's radar systems in the USAF, and can attest to the fact that those buggers get really hot! The page 113 comic is another of the Radio Terms Illustrated series where a play was made on a common word or phrase in the electronics realm. I colorized the images.
